International audienceThis contribution focuses on the self-translations of two Puerto Rican women writers, Rosario Ferré and Esmeralda Santiago. Taking as its starting point the concept of “bifocality”, understood here as a dual set of linguistic and cultural references for Puerto Rican individuals, this article wishes to show how (self-)translation allows the creation of a dual frame of expression that fully explores and, to a certain extent, endorses the act of bilingual writing as an empowering space where familiarity and alterity can interact.
